Gangsters Likely to Wear Electronic Tracer Bracelets

Listen

Members of organized crime rings will likely join convicted sex offenders in having to wear electronic ankle tracer-bracelets.

The Ministry of Justice reported the electronic monitoring scheme to President-elect Lee Myung-bak's transition team as part of its efforts to prevent recidivism.

``We are considering having offenders who repeat major crimes wear electronic bracelets, so we can trace their whereabouts,'' a ministry official said. Criminals subject to the device will include those who have committed murder, kidnapping or robbery, or members of crime rings.

The electronic bracelet tracks down the wearer via a global positioning system embedded in the device. The government has decided to make repeat sex offenders wear the devices starting Oct. 28 after a five-month trial period.

The device looks like wristwatch, but the government decided to make offenders wear it around their ankles to protect their anonymity.
