The National Police Agency added an extra two presidential candidates to its special escort list.
The agency announced Thursday that it would start guarding independent presidential candidate Lee Hoi-chang and Moon Kook-hyun of the Creative Korea Party from as early as Friday.
The agency said it decided to protect Lee as he became a target of political violence recently, adding that Moon Kook-hyun's camp asked for protection for its presidential candidate.
Since mid-October, the police have protected five presidential candidates _ Lee Myung-bak of the Grand National Party, Jung Dong-young of the United New Democratic Party, Lee In-jae of the Democratic Party, Kwon Young-gil of the Democratic Labor Party and Shim Dae-pyung of the People First Party.
It decided to increase the number of policemen guarding candidates on Thursday to 96, from 55, as the risk of attacks rises ahead of the presidential election slated for Dec. 19.
