Ban Ki-moon, secretary-general of the United Nations, Monday welcomed the second inter-Korean summit which is scheduled to take place in Pyongyang from Oct. 2 to 4.
In a statement, he wished the two leaders success in using the historic occasion to lay a solid foundation for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
The secretary-general hoped the summit will lead to increased inter-Korean reconciliation and cooperation, as well as promoting co-prosperity.
He further hoped that it will contribute to the progress of the six-party talks on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and advance security cooperation in Northeast Asia.
The United Nations stands ready to provide assistance as may be required, he said.
President Roh Moo-hyun, meanwhile, talked with the U.N. secretary-general over the phone, asking for the United Nations to fully support the inter-Korean summit, presidential spokesman Cheon Ho-seon said.
``Ban called Roh. In the talks, Roh reiterated his determination to further promote peace on the peninsula,'' Cheon told reporters.
