GM Daewoo Unionists Wage Partial Strike

Listen

Unionized workers at GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Co., South Korea's third-largest automaker, launched a two-day partial strike Monday after talks with the management on a pay hike collapsed last week.

The workers of GM Daewoo, controlled by U.S. auto giant General Motors Corp., started the two-hour walkout from 10:00 a.m., the labor union said, adding that night-shift workers will lay down tools for two hours from 9:00 p.m.

The unionists will also hold a four-hour strike on Wednesday, it said.

The labor union, which has a membership of 9,500, demands an 8.8 percent increase in base salary and a 400 percent bonus.

Unionized workers endorsed a plan to wage a partial strike on Wednesday. In the latest round of negotiations on Friday, the two sides failed to iron out their differences, the union said.

Union leaders are slated to resume the wage talks with management on Wednesday, it added.
