Videos on YouTube about an alleged American having sex with Asian women on his trip to Asia are raising a din but should be dealt with sternly on many accounts.
The clip reportedly appeared in February. It shows him having an encounter with an alleged Korean woman and includes some intimate close-up shots, triggering myriad postings ― one asking the price of a one-night stand with the woman in the photo.
The man identified himself as one who quit his job and started on his world tour last September. He allegedly asked for fees to see the clip in which he had sex with a Japanese woman. An alert spread through Naver about the man.
First, the man treats women as trophies to satisfy his puerility in direct violation of women’s rights. Second, his acts of sexual adventurism put blemishes on decent men and that is truly a violation of the reputation of these men. Third, his indecent exposure is an intrusion of the pertinent women’s privacy and a crime by itself for showing these scenes to the public. Fourth, this kind of escapade also has the potential to raise racial tensions. And, overall, private affairs are best left to the knowledge of the consenting adults. Breaking this commonsense barrier causes discomfort and embarrassment for many.
In a broader sense, there is a need to ensure minimum standards for cyberspace, in general, and for YouTube, in particular, to weed out videos that contain repulsive and otherwise objectionable material. The power of cyber tools is so formidable that they can make content, good or bad, available to a multitude of people. But the risks are multiple ― giving legitimacy to amoral acts or multiplying copycats.
This Casanova with an exhibitionistic disorder is not the first and will not be the last, but if there is a lesson to be learned from this malodorous case, it should be that some people do not have the sense of decency and need to be taught harshly with the help of others.
