With just a few days left in 2024, many of us are already thinking about plans for the year ahead. While we’re facing an unprecedented political upheaval and being swept into chaos, it’s important to remain steadfast and focus on our own paths forward. Now is the time to reflect on how we’ve navigated this year — both wisely and unwisely — and to make bold plans for the year to come. I have two things I’d like to share.
I can honestly say I finished this year strong, thanks to my determination and willingness to embrace exciting challenges. Instead of giving up, I completed the Spanish language proficiency test. The hectic schedule at the start of the year often tempted me to quit, and at times, I wanted to walk away from the exam. But each time, I reminded myself that this would be my last chance, and I didn’t want to regret not trying. As a working mom of two elementary school students, early in the morning was the only time I could find time to study. About a month and a half before the exam, I woke up at 4:30 a.m. at least four times a week to study. It was tough, but I pushed through.
The test results haven’t been released yet, but no matter the outcome, I’m incredibly proud of myself for staying committed and not giving in to circumstances. I learned valuable lessons about resilience and strength during challenging times. Yes, I finished this year strong.
Now, I have big news for next year. In January 2025, my family and I will be relocating to Uzbekistan! My husband has been assigned to manage the regional office there as an expatriate. OH MY GOD! Uzbekistan! — the land where the Great Silk Road once passed through, with rich history in every corner!
In the beginning, it was not an easy choice to make since moving to a new country involves a series of worries. This is especially true for a country we are unfamiliar with. Starting a life from scratch in a new country is a great challenge and making a move with the children seems demanding. Now, my family is determined to explore Uzbekistan, the nation where ample opportunities and excitement await us. So, the second chapter of my life begins starting from the first month of 2025.
I wish those reading my piece today to be inspired, challenged and energized by my achievement this year and the move I make next year. I will keep sharing my life in the hidden gem of Central Asia, Uzbekistan! "Goodbye 2024 and, hello 2025!"
