On Feb. 24, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), a non-profit organization that represents the music recording industry worldwide, announced the Global Artist Chart and Global Album Charts for 2022. South Korean boy band Stray Kids, formed by JYP Entertainment, ranked No. 7 on the Global Artist Chart. Their latest album, “MAXIDENT,” ranked No. 6, while “ODDINARY” ranked No. 14 on the Global Album Chart. With such worldwide success, one might question whether the group should still be considered “stray.”

Stray Kids burst onto the music scene in 2017. They became popular after appearing on a reality show with the same name. The show follows the members as they train and prepare for their debut and includes challenges, competitions, and performances.

The show was well-received by fans and helped to introduce the group to a wider audience. It allowed fans to get to know the members on a more personal level, as they showcased their individual talents and personalities. The show also helped to highlight the hard work and dedication that goes into becoming a K-pop idol. It provided a behind-the-scenes look at the intense training and preparation that the members underwent, which helped to build respect and admiration from fans.

As demonstrated through the training sessions and auditions on the show, Park Jin-young, founder and CEO of JYP Entertainment, has been heavily involved in the development of Stray Kids and has offered a great deal of support to the group. He has praised their musical abilities and work ethic and expressed his belief that they have the potential to become one of the top K-pop groups in the industry. JYP Entertainment has also granted Stray Kids significant creative control over their music and performances, enabling them to write and produce their own songs and choreography.

With support from JYP, Stray Kids became popular due to several factors. First, their self-developed unique sound and style set them apart from other K-pop groups. Stray Kids blend hip-hop, rap and EDM into their music, which has appealed to many fans who enjoy these genres.

Second, their lyrics often address issues that young people face in today's society, such as mental health, identity and social pressures. This has helped them connect with their fans on a deeper level and has resonated with many people who can relate to these themes.

Third, their powerful and dynamic performances have garnered them a reputation as one of the most exciting live acts in K-pop. They are known for their high-energy dance routines, impressive vocal abilities, and charismatic stage presence, which has earned them a loyal fanbase.

Finally, Stray Kids have also been very active on social media, where they share behind-the-scenes content, interact with fans, and showcase their personalities. This has helped them build a strong connection with their fans and has contributed to their popularity.

The band has eight talented and unique members, each bringing their own special qualities. Bang Chan is the leader and guides the band's creative vision. Lee Know has a keen ear for melody and a knack for crafting unforgettable hooks. Changbin writes lyrics that capture the essence of the human experience. Hyunjin's dancing brings energy and precision to the group's live performances. Han's sharp flow and ability to tell complex stories through his lyrics are impressive. Felix has a powerful voice and an infectious energy that can light up any stage. Seungmin's vocal ability ranges from soft and gentle to powerful and bombastic. I.N has a delicate yet powerful voice and a talent for crafting memorable melodies.

-In March 2022, following BTS and SuperM, “ODDINARY” became the third South Korean artist to top the Billboard 200 chart.

-In August 2022, following BTS and Big Bang, they became the third South Korean boy group to surpass 10 million subscribers on YouTube and receive a Diamond Button.

-In October 2022, following BTS, “MAXIDENT” became the second South Korean artist to achieve two No.1s on the Billboard 200 chart.

The name “Stray Kids” was created by Park, the CEO of JYP Entertainment, in collaboration with the members. The name represents the idea of young people who feel like they don't fit in, or are “strays” in society. The members of the group have talked about feeling like they were outsiders at times, and how music was a way for them to find a sense of belonging. The name also represents the group's desire to create music that can comfort and encourage people who may feel lost or uncertain. In an interview, Bang Chan explained that the name means “we're here for you” and “we're going to be your friends”.

Overall, the name “Stray Kids” reflects the group's commitment to creating music that speaks to young people and helps them feel understood and supported. It also represents their desire to connect with their fans on a deeper level and create a sense of community and belonging. Through their music, lyrics, and performances, the group has successfully captured the attention of stray kids all over the world. Now even the fans do not need to be strays anymore.
