Irrational Expat Mob

Listen

Dear editor,

For the past few months I have been stunned by how emotional and herd-like the opinions of expats have been on the beef issue.

After reading the opinions of Andrew Jackson and Michael Breen it is clear to me that there is a ``mob'' of expats who think alike and are unable to think critically on this issue.

It's clear that opinions fell along nationalistic/cultural lines with most Koreans agreeing that something was wrong and most nationalistic foreigners taking the other side.

These expats, in their Doppler blogs which all said the same thing and referenced the same sources, called the Korean protesters unscientific. But of course it is not unscientific to want higher standards for imported beef.

The United States itself banned Canadian beef from cattle older than 30 months for over 5 years. If the United States uses the 30-month line for imported beef, then why shouldn't Koreans? Koreans, in comparison, raised rational objections to U.S. beef.

Expats like Breen and Jackson unfortunately do not address the real concerns of Koreans and made it seem as if Koreans were acting emotionally, when in truth it was Expat's that were acting overly emotionally, irrationally and ultra-nationalistically.
