The shooting at Virginia Tech is quite a tragedy, but I find it equally tragic that the Korean government, and perhaps many of the Korean people, seemingly feel somehow responsible, or connected to this tragedy.
Frankly, I am ashamed that my government continues to stick its head in the sand and bow to internal political pressures of a well financed and well organized pro-gun lobby and refuses to adopt any responsible gun control laws.
The actions and motivations of Cho Seung-hui are most definitely not a result of his Korean heritage and upbringing. It is the result of his own personal psychological problems that have nothing to do with him being Korean, and his assimilation of darker aspects of American culture and easy access to guns.
I feel awful that many Korean people feel any sense of connectedness to this because if he had stayed in Korea and went to school in Korea, this would have never happened! I have met and known many Korean people in the United States and they are good, honest, forthright, hard working people.
Ultimately, Cho is responsible for his actions, but the fact that he is Korean in no way indicative of the Korean people. We as Americans can only look at ourselves and shoulder the blame for promoting violence through our movies, television, and gun culture, and our irresponsible lack of any sensible gun control laws.
