Jang Hyeong-cheol from label Ordinary People will become the youngest Korean fashion designer to participate in New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2016.
Jang, 31, launched the brand in 2011 after working as head designer at Beyond Closet, led by Ko Tae-yong. Ko, 34, was the youngest designer to take part in the fashion event.
Ordinary People debuted at Seoul Fashion Week in 2013 and is known for its classic yet sophisticated designs. It has a cult following among celebrities.
New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2016, slated for July 13-16, is divided into menswear and womenswear for the first time, and Jang will grace the stage on the men’s runway.
“Many Asian designers still are not well known in New York so the participation of a Korean designer in the menswear collection means a lot,” Jang said.
He also will take part in “Concept Korea,” a government-led project designed to expand global recognition of rising Korean designers. Representatives include Ko Tae-yong, Lee Ju-young of Resurrection and Lee Seung-hee of LEY II.
