When tens of thousands of K-pop fans descend on Busan next week, local tourism officials are hoping they bring a massive appetite.
The Busan Metropolitan Government and Busan Tourism Organization announced Thursday the official launch of the "2026 Busan Gourmet Selection," a monthlong culinary campaign designed to transform the city into a playground for food lovers. Running through June 30, the event brings together the city's finest culinary minds in an unprecedented series of collaborative pop-ups and limited edition menus.
A total of 26 restaurants, paired into 13 teams, are participating this year. The lineup features an eclectic mix of genres spanning traditional Korean, Western, Japanese, Thai and vegan dining, and includes several prominent venues recognized by the Michelin Guide Seoul & Busan.
Unlike previous iterations of the program, which relied on handpicked selections primarily restricted to Michelin star establishments, city officials introduced an open public bidding system this year. The structural change lowers the barrier to entry, allowing independent neighborhood eateries — ranging from local noodle shops like Cha Ae Jeon Halmae Kalguksu to trend-setting vegan spaces like Arp — to collaborate side-by-side with high-end dining institutions like Chaoran.
"Busan is rapidly evolving into a gastronomic hub driven by Michelin venues, local favorites and diverse plant-based kitchens," said Na Yoon-bin, director-general of the southern port city's Tourism and MICE Bureau. "We will continue to uncover and support culinary tourism initiatives that foster symbiotic growth between neighborhood restaurants and the broader tourism economy."
The timing of the culinary blitz is deliberate.
The festival directly overlaps with the anticipated "BTS World Tour 'ARIRANG' in Busan" concerts scheduled for June 12 and 13. By offering exclusive dining experiences across the city, municipal planners hope to encourage incoming concertgoers to extend their stays, venture deeper into neighborhood commercial districts and increase local retail spending.
To broaden access, several participating culinary teams will also establish temporary food stalls inside Port Village Busan, an immersive market running through June 21 at Busan Port Pier 1. The open-air culinary market is expected to draw more than 200,000 visitors over its three-week run.
Following a successful pilot program late last year, city officials have confirmed that the Gourmet Selection will now become a permanent biannual fixture on Busan's cultural calendar. The first phase will anchor the city's summer concert season this June, while a second phase is slated to launch in October to coincide with the city's sweeping autumn cultural showcase, Festival Shiwol.
