Kim is a caring leader in her community

Kim Ye-won, 10, a fourth grader at Jaeun Elementary School in Sinan, South Jeolla Province, is a warm-hearted leader who tries to help friends who are going through hardship. She was the class president in the first semester.

With curiosity and patience, she does not give up on questions to which she wants to know the answer, and this naturally leads her to self-motivated learning. She shares and teaches what she has learned to other students.

Thanks to her Cambodian mother, Kim is able to speak fluent Korean and Cambodian, and won silver and gold awards consecutively at a bilingual speech contest held by the provincial government in 2016 and 2017. In 2017, she also won a bronze in the nation-level contest.

Kim is full of community spirit as she loves to share home-grown pumpkins, cucumbers, eggplants and peppers with senior citizens in the town.

She has two younger siblings whom she takes care of, sending them to school and preparing snacks to help out their working parents.

Lee wants to share her versatile skills in music, science

Lee Ji-eun, 11, at Hansan Elementary School in Seoul, is the class vice president for second semester, with her talents in various fields.

She is a talented musician who plays both the piano and viola. She is a member of “Damuse,” an orchestra consisting of students with multicultural backgrounds, and has volunteered to play music for the needy for more than 100 hours since she entered the school.

Lee is especially interested in science and has joined several science classes, and was selected as a student for Global Gifted Science Education Center at Seoul National University of Education.

She is also interested in computer and technology, and tries hard to make good videos using her various skills.

Lee has learned Chinese from her Chinese mother. She hopes to teach science in different languages when she grows up.
