UFC fighter Bang vows to win in Germany

Mixed martial artist Bang Tae-hyun from Korean Top Team said in an open training session on Aug. 18 he was confident, ahead of his fifth competition in an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) bout next month in Hamburg, Germany.
The fighter, dubbed “the super natural,” will arrive in Hamburg on Aug. 25 to compete in a lightweight division competition against German fighter Nick Hein on Sept. 3. Bang is looking forward to his first visit to Germany.
“I’ve always wanted to go to the country. For me it’s psychologically easier to play overseas as there are fewer things to take care of, such as relatives coming to see my match,” Bang said in an interview after his training session in western Seoul.
Last November, when he won a match in Seoul against Leo Kuntz of the U.S. by a split decision, watchers pointed out Bang’s lack of physical strength. For the upcoming match, Bang has improved his strength. “I don’t think I am lacking in strength. Of course, I prepared a lot.”
Hein, a former judoka, is known for winning by decision after a long fight. The German fighter nicknamed “sergeant” has only lost once in four UFC fights.
“I will fight as much as I can. I am planning to maintain my style, and beat the other guy,” Bang said. Bang is known for his rough and hard style based on wrestling and boxing skills. “I will do my best to show my iron fist on the big stage.”
Bang signed a contract with UFC in 2013, becoming the seventh Korean UFC fighter. Since, he recorded two wins and two loses. At 33, Bang admits there is not enough time to increase his ranking. He didn’t conceal his ambitions, but he believes enjoying the match is his priority.
“When I started the sport, it was really entertaining. As I get older it feels like I am fighting to earn money,” he said laughing. “I will try to enjoy the upcoming bouts like my first fight. I hope to fight without injuries and to hold one more match this year if there’s a chance,” he said.
Bang has earned another nickname, “Korean cowboy,” when he wore a cowboy hat after winning a UFC match in 2014. Looking forward to another victory, he bought a more expensive hat.
Hamburg is where star soccer player Son Heung-min used to play and where many Koreans reside. “I would really appreciate it if they would cheer for me.”
“I don’t have many female fans, but some middle-aged male fans recognize me on the streets. I’m very thankful for their support,” Bang said.
