Choi Won-suk, a photographer with The Korea Times, has received a top award from the Korea Press Photographers Association for his photos published in the Feb. 9 edition of the nation’s oldest English daily newspaper.

Choi won the Monthly Press Photography Award in the portrait category. His photos featured Chung Choon-mo, a “gat” master. “Gat” is a traditional Korean hat for men.

He portrayed Chung’s dedication in making “gat” for a feature story under the title “More than men’s hats” written by Korea Times reporter Chung Ah-young.

Master Chung, Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 4, runs his workshop in Samseong-dong, southern Seoul.

The association also awarded Huh Sang-wook of the Sports Chosun and reporters in five other categories.
