Veteran actress Hwang dies

Veteran actress Hwang Jung-soon died from complications of chronic pneumonia, a condition she had suffered since 2010, according to her family.

The long-time stage and film actress was 89.

After entering the Dongyang Theater Company in 1940, Hwang made her stage debut at the age of 18 in the play “You and Me” (1943).

She acted in more than 200 plays and 350 movies through the late 1980s, becoming a quintessential mother figure in cinema as her age advanced.

Her definitive works in film include the 1963 Yoo Hyun-mok movie, “Kim’s Daughters,” based on the Park Kyung-ri novel of the same name, “The Body Confession” (1964), “Madam Hwasan” (1968) and “Tomorrow’s Scenery of Korea” (1971).

She received a lifetime achievement award last year at the Dae Jong Film Awards.

Hwang was born in 1925 in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province. A memorial altar has been set up at St. Mary’s Hospital.
