Stephen Bosworth, former U.S. ambassador to Korea and negotiator on North Korea's nuclear program, will head the U.S.-Korea Institute (USKI) at John Hopkins University’s Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).

The institute said Tuesday that Bosworth will replace Don Oberdorfer, the founder of the institute, beginning July 1. Oberdorfer will take on the position of chairman emeritus.

“Ambassador Bosworth is one of America's most distinguished diplomats with deep knowledge of Korea, its global role and regional interests," SAIS Dean Vali Nasr said in a press release.

“He will be a valuable addition to SAIS's Korean Studies Program and the U.S.-Korea Institute's critical work on Korea and Asia."

Bosworth served as the U.S. special representative for North Korea policy from 2009 to 2011. He was also U.S. ambassador to Korea for from 1997 to 2001.

He served as secretary general of the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization (KEDO) from 1995 to 1997.

Bosworth also served as the dean of Tufts University's Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.

The USKI was established in 2006 as part of a program aimed at increasing understanding of Korean affairs and the increasing importance of the alliance between Korea and the U.S.

The institute also hosts events and campaigns focused on educating the public about Korea related subjects.
