Kim wins alumni award from Columbia University

Kim Chong-yang, chairman of the Hanyang University school board, was presented with Columbia University’s 2013 Distinguished Alumni Award, Friday.

He is the first Korean to receive this award in recognition for his contribution to human rights and work at Hanyang.

Kim was chairman of the International Human Rights League of Korea and was responsible for strengthening human rights movements internationally, including in North Korea.

Kim served as president of Hanyang from 1993 to 2011. In 2002, he founded Hanyang Cyber University.

The award was initiated in the 1970s by Columbia’s Alumni Council and Dr. William Summerscales to acknowledge the variety of careers that alumni have fostered.

It is now awarded by Columbia University’s Teachers College.

Kim received his educational technology doctoral degree from Columbia in 1983.
