Nam Young-jin, former reporter of Hankook Ilbo daily, sister company of The Korea Times, was elected chairman of Amnesty International Korea, Monday.
The world's largest human rights watchdog said Nam was elected to take the top position in a general meeting for the Korean office held on April 25 in Seoul.
The 55-year-old will represent Amnesty International Korea along with nine other executives for a term of two years.
``I have witnessed the country's human rights conditions backpedalling in recent years,'' Nam said in his acceptance speech. ``I will fully cooperate to improve global human rights conditions and also actively launch campaigns to enhance the freedom of speech and the dignity of human beings in this country.''
After working as reporter for Hankook Ilbo daily between 1982 and 2002, he served as president of the Journalists Association of Korea in 2006 and 2007. He currently lectures as a professor at Kyungmin College Universtiy in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province.
