Huh Joon-young, a former police chief, was named CEO of state-run Korail for a three-year term, Thursday.
Born in Daegu, the 57-year-old graduated from Korea University’s law department. He was Korean consul in Hong Kong and started his police career in 1993.
After holding the chief’s post at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency in 2004, Huh became the commissioner general of the National Police Agency.
He resigned in late 2005 to take responsibility for the death of a farmer during a police crackdown on a farmers rally against the opening of the nation’s rice market.
The Korail union, however, is opposing the appointment of Huh, claiming the government picked the non-expert in railways because he is from the same university as that of President Lee Myung-bak and is a governing Grand National Party supporter.
