Ko Hak-yong was named the new chairman of the Korea Press Foundation Tuesday. Yonhap News reported that the Korea Press Foundation board of directors elected the 66-year-old Ko, who is a member of the Korea Press Ethics Commission where he is in charge of the committee dealing with complaints against the media.
According to the foundation's articles of incorporation, the chairman of the board of directors is appointed by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Ko started as a journalist with the Chosun Ilbo, where he was also an editorial writer. As part of the Korea Press Ethics Commission, Ko dealt with complaints from Korean newspaper readers and ethical issues regarding journalism.
The Korea Press Foundation is a non-profit organization to serve and protect the media and public interest. It was formed in 1999, after the integration of the Korea Press, Korea Press Institute and Korea Journalists Fund. Among the foundation's activities are seminars and programs to enhance the development of professional journalism in Korea.
