The first president of the Constitutional Court Cho Kyu-kwang, 82, was given an award for his contribution to improving the Korean constitution and administrative law.
The Constitutional Court said Thursday Cho was named winner of the ``Mokchon Prize'' in recognition of his endeavors as the first president of the court to ensure people's basic legal rights are protected under the constitution and to improve Korean administrative law.
The Mokchon Prize was established in 2005 to pay tribute to the former judge and head of the Ministry of Government Legislation Kim Do-chang, who passed away that year.
Born in 1926, he graduated from Seoul National University in 1948 and passed the Korean bar exam the following year. He served as the first president of the Constitutional Court between 1988 and 1994.
