For some going to the toilet in the morning is their worst experience of the day, with their constipation causing them great distress. They may spend more than 5 minutes on the toilet seat but even that may not be long enough.

There are many factors causing constipation but most commonly its a result of severe stress, poor eating habits and a lack of exercise.

Here are several common beliefs about constipation. Are they true?

1. You have constipation when you your bowel movements are less than three times a week: False. It is quite natural for people to have few bowel movements according to conditions or environment. Unless stools are extremely hard, three times a week can be considered normal.

2. Pushing too hard can lead to constipation: False. Pushing too hard might cause hemorrhoids, but not constipation.

3. Skipping breakfast causes constipation: True. Some people think having breakfast before a bowel movement is not good. However, putting food into the body can assist in getting the bowels to work. Also, skipping meals can slow intestinal movement and constipation can get worse.

4. Women suffer more from constipation than men: True. Women eat less than men, which means they eat less fiber. Also, progesterone plays a role in the large intestine's movement. Women tend to suffer from constipation around three to four times that of than men. Some women are reluctant to use public toilets, a factor which can increase their chances of getting constipated.

The consumption of refined, too greasy or fatty foods can lead to constipation. Try to lessen your intake of fast foods, alcohol and carbonated drinks.

Fresh vegetables and mushrooms are highly nutritious and aid intestinal movement. Sweet potato, potatoes, apples, pears and yogurt are also good.

Drinking two cups of cold water might help bring on a nature call. But too much water can cause bloating for people with weak kidneys.

Office workers tend to spend a lot of time sitting. Go jogging in the mornings or do simple stretching during lunchtime.

Massaging the tummy can also help. Gently rub the stomach with movements from the down right side of your stomach to the left for two minutes. Twice a day will help your instestines.

An irregular lifestyle can also worsen the disorder. Try to eat and sleep regularly and correctly.

Constipation is, however, sometimes beyond self-help. If it gets worse, visit either an oriental medicine clinic or a hospital. It may be related to muscular or circulation problems and need professional assistance.
