Kim Seul-ong, director of the Sejong Institute of Korean Language and Culture, holds a republication of "Hunminjeongeum" Eonhae edition, left, and a "Hunminjeongeum" Haerye edition during a press conference in Seoul, Thursday. The Kansong Art and Culture Foundation has partnered with publisher Gaonnuri to reprint the "Hunminjeongeum" Haerye edition from its collection, aiming to closely replicate its original state on the occasion of the 580th anniversary of the invention of Hangeul, or the Korean alphabet. The Haerye edition includes additional explanations behind the mechanism of the writing system in Chinese characters and was published three years after the proclamation of "Hunminjeongeum" in 1443, while the Eonhae edition explains the same content in Korean letters. This is the first time the Haerye edition has been reproduced with the Eonhae edition of "Hunminjeongeum," complete with English translation and the books will be available at local bookstores on Hangeul Day, which falls on Oct. 9.
