A Korean language writing contest for foreigners and Koreans residing abroad will be held Monday in the outdoor theater under the sponsorship of the Institute of Language Research and Education of Yonsei University.
The 16th Annual National Korean Language Writing Contest for foreign nationals is timed to coincide with Hangeul (Korean alphabet) Day, which falls on Oct. 9. It honors King Sejong, who created the alphabet.
Yonsei University's Institute of Language Research and Education will hold the contest for foreigners and overseas Koreans to promote friendship among those learning the Korean language.
To qualify, foreign nationals over 16 years of age must have resided in Korea no longer than eight years. Foreign-born Koreans over 17 years of age who have resided in Korea no longer than five years are also eligible. People born in Korea are required to have lived abroad for more than 12 years.
The contest will be divided into two categories _ poetry and essay. Eleven cash prizes will be awarded. The first prize is 700,000 won (about $600) and four second-place contestants will receive 500,000 won (about $550). All competitors will receive a souvenir, snacks and lunch. Door prizes will be given to about 50 participants before the award ceremonies.
Applications will be accepted up until the start of the contest, which is 10 a.m., Oct. 8.
