Donhwamun Traditional Theater

Donhwamun Traditional Theater runs a special traditional Korean music performance program, "Pre & Free," until May 27.

Donhwamun Traditional Theater has prepared diverse performances that suit the tastes of each of the five different audience groups: children, teenagers, senior citizens, foreigners and the general public. Through "Pre & Free," the theater aims to encourage audiences to have more interest in traditional Korean music. 25 artists and bands will participate in the performances.

‘Saturday Performance of Korean Music & Dance'

National Gugak Center

Throughout 2017

Every Saturday, Korean music and dance performances will be presented at the National Gugak Center.

For over 30 years, the National Gugak Center has provided audiences with traditional music and dance performances every Saturday. This year, the center aims to present a more profound level of traditional Korean performing arts, through programs such as "Listening to Traditional Korean Music in Depth" and "Traditional Korean Singing and Dancing Performance for the Enthusiasts." In addition, starting this year, the performances will be staged at the newly renovated Umyeondang Theater, which is designed to convey traditional sounds to audiences without using any speakers or microphones.

‘Hangeul Design: Prototypes and Future of Korean Alphabet'

National Hangeul Museum

The National Hangeul Museum runs a special exhibition on hangeul and design until May 28.

This exhibition consists of two sections. The first section presents all 33 chapters of Hunminjeongeum, a document published and proclaimed by King Sejong that describes hangeul, through a video and artwork. The second section features 30 designs that are inspired by hangeul.

‘Last Words to My Fellow Koreans: Ahn Jung-geun's Calligraphy from Prison'

National Museum of Korean Contemporary History

The calligraphy of Ahn Jung-geun, a Korean independence activist, will be presented at the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History until May 28.

The National Museum of Korean Contemporary History recently acquired Ahn Jung-geun's calligraphy that was written while he was imprisoned at Lushun Prison. From the day he was sentenced to death until his execution, Ahn wrote calligraphy with his last energy. The calligraphy reveals his devotion to Korea as an educator, Confucian scholar and leader of the independence movement.

‘Bring Them Home’

Until June 11

In memory of soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Korean War, the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History is running a special exhibition, “Bring Them Home” until June 11.

This exhibition features diverse relics and historical records associated with the perished soldiers, including uniforms, rifles and army flags. The event will also provide visitors with broad and detailed information on national efforts to recover and identify the bodies of the dead soldiers.

‘A Joy of Spring: Scenery, Blossom and Delicacy'

National Folk Museum of Korea

Until June 20

Celebrating the upcoming PyeongChang Winter Olympics, an exhibition featuring the nature and food of Gangwon Province will be held at the National Folk Museum of Korea.

This exhibition consists of three sections. The first section, "Scenery," presents diverse artworks and photographs that portray the mountains of Gangwon Province. The second section, "Blossom," features modern paintings and craftworks related to the wildflowers in Gangwon Province, as well as numerous artifacts used in spring picnics. In the last section, "Delicacy," the regional food of Gangwon Province will be exhibited.

‘Roads of Arabia: The Archeological Treasures of Saudi Arabia'

National Museum of Korea

May 9 to Aug. 27

In collaboration with Saudi Commission for Tourism & National Heritage, the National Museum of Korea presents archeological treasures of Saudi Arabia from May 9 to Aug. 27.

This exhibition features 466 artifacts including a human-shaped stone sculpture created in 4,000 B.C. and a huge door that once decorated Kaaba, an important Islamic shrine. Through the artifacts, visitors will learn about the long history of Arabia that ranges from prehistoric times to the foundation of Saudi Arabia in the 20th century.

‘Presentation/representation'

Sungkok Art Museum

The Sungkok Art Museum runs a special exhibition "presentation/representation" which features contemporary German photography.

This exhibition introduces artistic trends of contemporary German photographers who are actively working after German reunification. Unlike their predecessors, this new generation of photographers does not follow a certain predominant style that can be categorized. Instead, the artists explore their own styles of expression and artistic strategies. Their themes of expression range from historical and social issues to personal, everyday events. In addition, the participating artists use various new technologies, such as digital imaging or large-size printing, to create unique and diverse images. This exhibition is a collaboration between Sungkok Art Museum, Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (IfA) and Goethe Institut Korea.

‘Saimdang, Her Garden'

Seoul Museum

Paintings of Shin Saimdang, one of the best-known female artists from Joseon Kingdom, whose name still remains today, is exhibited at the Seoul Museum until June 11.

This exhibition focuses on Saimdang's paintings of plants and animals in her garden, which show her delicate and detailed portrayal of nature. Along with her paintings, the Seoul Museum presents numerous artistic critiques she has received throughout history, shedding a new light on her artistry.

‘Jung Do Jun: Stroke & Structure’

Seoul Calligraphy Art Museum

The Seoul Calligraphy Art Museum presents works of contemporary calligrapher Jung Do Jun from May 12 to June 11.

Jung Do Jun is known for his unique style of combining pictorial representations of Chinese characters with hangeul calligraphy. The exhibition includes his major works, such as “Sky, Land and Human,” “Love” and “Rainbow,” as well as various new works. The purpose of this event is to offer a vision for the future of contemporary calligraphy. The event also provides an opportunity to observe the philosophy within calligraphy and its relevance to contemporary social issues.

‘PIXAR: 30 Years of Animation'

Dongdaemun Design Plaza

Dongdaemun Design Plaza runs the special exhibition "PIXAR: 30 Years of Animation" from April 15 to Aug. 8.

This exhibition features 450 pieces of art by Pixar artists, including drawings, paintings and 3D character models. The exhibition consists of three sections: Character, Story, and World. Each section presents how the characters, stories, and settings of the Pixar animations are created.

‘Samramansang: from Kim Whanki to Yang Fudong'

National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Seoul

Under the title of "Samramansang," MMCA Seoul presents artworks it has newly acquired over the last four years.

From 2013 to 2016, the MMCA has obtained 932 pieces of artwork, and 130 of them will be displayed in this exhibition. The selection ranges from works by the late modern artists to those created by young artists of the 21st century.

‘The Selby House'

Daelim Museum

Works of American photographer Toad Selby will be exhibited at the Daelim Museum under the title of "The Selby House."

Selby has portrayed unique, creative, and independent lifestyles of numerous artists and creators from different fields, from Karl Lagerfeld, the head designer of Chanel, to Eric Werner and Maya Henry, who run a restaurant deep in the jungles of Mexico. Around 400 of his photographs, illustrations and videos will be presented in this exhibition.

A children’s musical “Finding Lost Civilizations” will be staged at the National Museum of Korea until June 6.

The musical features famous characters from two beloved children’s animation films, “Farting King Pung Pung” and “Dudada Kung.” The musical includes a dynamic laser show, realistic 3D effects and an LED performance that will captivate both children and parents. Through the exciting story of adventure, the musical will educate children about different civilizations and their histories.
