Jihyo of K-pop girl group TWICE recently drew attention after sharing her moisturizing skin care routine for maintaining glowing skin even during world tours.
In a recent behind-the-scenes video uploaded to TWICE’s YouTube channel, Jihyo showed relaxed moments from the group’s world tour in Atlanta, including dining out with fellow member Jeongyeon and spending a personal “skin care day” at the hotel.
She especially focused on skin care before and after concerts. After cleansing, she applied ampoule products and explained, “Whenever I apply skin care, I use a beauty device for at least 30 seconds,” while demonstrating the routine herself. She also used a neck-wrinkle cream and took care of her hands and feet.
Jihyo squeezed out leftover essence from a sheet mask package and layered it onto her face, adding, “I’ve found that applying everything thinly in several layers helps absorption the best.” She finished the routine with a facial sheet mask for extra hydration.
Since long flights and hotel stays can easily dry out the skin, maintaining moisture becomes especially important. But does layering skin care products thinly several times actually help with hydration?
According to skin care experts, Jihyo’s “thin layering” method can indeed help reduce dryness. However, rather than dramatically increasing deep absorption into the skin, the method is better understood as helping products spread more evenly across the skin’s surface and maintain moisture longer.
The outermost layer of skin, the stratum corneum, acts as a protective barrier that prevents moisture loss and shields against irritation. When this barrier becomes dry, skin can feel tight and rough, and makeup may start to cake or separate. Moisturizing products such as ampoules and creams help form a protective layer on the skin surface, locking in hydration and keeping skin soft and supple.
The key, however, is not applying more product, but applying an appropriate amount evenly. Using too much at once can leave products sitting heavily on the skin. Applying smaller amounts gradually, like Jihyo does, allows the formula to spread more evenly and makes it easier to target dry areas such as around the cheeks or mouth.
Jihyo's sheet mask trick
Jihyo’s method of applying leftover essence from sheet mask packaging before putting on the mask can be useful when skin feels especially dry. However, experts warn against overapplying thick layers just because the essence feels “too precious to waste.”
Excess product can make the skin overly slippery, preventing the sheet mask from adhering properly. Instead, it is better to spread the essence lightly and gently press it into the skin with the palms. The mask adheres more effectively when the skin feels hydrated but not greasy.
It is also important to follow the recommended sheet mask time listed on the product. Leaving a mask on for too long does not increase effectiveness; in fact, once the mask begins drying out, it may actually make the skin feel drier afterward.
Any remaining essence can be lightly patted into the skin or applied to dry areas like the hands and feet.
Many people, like Jihyo, also incorporate beauty devices into their skin care routines. These devices use vibrations, microcurrents, warming or cooling functions to help spread products evenly or provide gentle facial massage.
Experts recommend applying enough skincare product first, then gliding the device gently across the skin rather than pressing firmly. On days when the skin feels irritated, red, sensitive or when breakouts appear, it may be better to shorten usage time or skip the device entirely.
