Jesus portrait found after being stolen 150 years ago

Listen

A priceless portrait of Jesus stolen 150 years ago has been found after a petty thief tried to sell it to a church in the U.S., the Telegraph reported Aug. 4.

The painting, which is said to have been painted from a likeness on a sweat cloth used to wipe Jesus' face before his crucifixion, is even said to have been blessed by Pope Leo XIII.

Its existence was revealed after Kelly Ghormley tried to sell the painting to a church in Madisonville, Tenn.

She is alleged to have stolen it from a trailer home belonging to a man identified only as Frosty.

Church officials who were offered the painting realized its importance and alerted police.

It is not known how the painting came to be in Tennessee, but its owner said he was sold the religious relic more than 15 years ago.
