KARA top Oricon weekly singles chart

Korean girl group Kara topped Japan’s Oricon weekly singles chart Tuesday with their third single, "Jet Coaster Love."

The single sold 12,300 copies in its first week after release on April 6 despite the massive earthquake, tsunami and ensuing radiation leak from damaged nuclear power plants there.

According to Korean entertainment agency DSP Media, it is a record high for a foreign girl band on the Japanese singles chart since Oricon first released rankings of singles in January, 1968. British girl band, the Nolans, was the first foreign group to place top but in the 16th week after they released its single, Dancing Sister, in November 1980.

It is also a new record among Korean artists active in Japan. BoA is the only Korean female singer who has ever achieved the honor in the Oricon weekly chart. She placed top in April, 2005.

After the five-member group came onto the Japanese music scene last August, they earned 1.3 billion yen (17.8 billion won) in combined sales of singles, albums and DVDs last year. The group was listed No. 1 in album sales as a newcomer according to statistics compiled by the Japanese music chart.

발매 첫 주 싱글 1위한 최초 해외 여성그룹

걸그룹 카라가 일본에서 발표한 세 번째 싱글 '제트코스터 러브(Jet Coaster Love)'가 12일 발표된 오리콘 주간 싱글차트 1위에 올랐다. 지난 6일 발매돼 첫 주에만 12만3000장 팔려나갔다. 카라가 일본에서 발매한 싱글 중 최고 기록이다.

오리콘이 싱글음반 순위를 발표하기 시작한 1968년 1월 이후 해외 여성그룹이 첫 주에 정상을 차지한 것은 43년3개월 만에 처음이다. 해외 여성그룹이 주간 싱글차트 1위에 오른 것도 30년 5개월 만이다. 1980년 11월 영국 여성그룹 놀랜즈(The Nolans)가 '댄싱 시스터(Dancing Sister)'로 발매 16주 만에 정상에 오른 적이 있었다.

지난해 8월 일본 활동을 시작한 카라는 지난해 싱글 및 앨범, DVD 등을 합산한 총 매출액이 13억엔(178억원)에 달했으며, 오리콘이 집계한 연간 신인 음반 매출 부문 1위에 올랐다.
