Group members 5-second singers?

These days, how many members of pop groups actually have good enough voices to perform as real singers?

MBC, one of the three major nationwide TV networks in Korea, raised the issue during the main evening news program, News Desk, at 9 p.m. Tuesday, reporting that group members focus on other talents rather than voice capabilities.

The broadcaster chose members of three groups — After School, MBLAQ and Infinity — to examine.

“In terms of individuals, Gahee sings for 18 seconds, Raina 13 seconds, Jungah six seconds and Joo-yeon the shortest at only three seconds,” it reported about the members of After School.

“All the members of group MBLAQ sing longer than those of After School on an individual basis. However, once the time all the members sing together is excluded, G.O. sings for 32 seconds and Mir for 15,” it said.

News Desk also criticized the new group Infinity, and said, “Individual members sing for less than five seconds or range from one to four seconds. This is too a short time for them to be called singers.”

In particular, MBC lashed out at the entertainment community. “A variety of talents are regarded as more important than singing capability itself. As a result, the singers cannot survive for long and rather prefer to become actors or host entertainment programs based on instant popularity as members of a pop group.”

“Actual singers with outstanding voice capability have been deprived of their real position in the entertainment community amid the environment that such group members can equally enjoy popularity,” music commentator Im Jin-mo was quoted as saying. “Basically what singers have to do is sing. How much can a singer show of his or her voice capability, in only 3.5 seconds of singing,” he lamented.

Netizens responded to the broadcast with a number of comments. “It’s too scathing a report.”

“The singers named above could feel humiliated. However, News Desk did not make this up. As a result, the singers deserve the humiliation.”

“The problems are well known and correctly exposed,” and “The singing community is as it stands. It’s a little bitter.”

지난 20일 방송된 MBC ‘뉴스데스크’에서는 최근 가창력 보다는 재능에 초점을 맞춘 아이돌 가수들의 문제점을 보도해 가창력이 없는 가수들에게 일침을 가했다.

먼저 ‘뉴스데스크’ 측은 걸그룹 애프터스쿨의 멤버들을 예로 들어 “가수 개인별로 노래한 시간이 가희가 18초, 레이나가 13초, 정아가 6초, 주연은 가장 적은 3초였다.”고 적나라하게 비판했다.

이어 “그룹 엠블랙은 개인별로 노래하는 시간이 애프터스쿨보다는 길지만 전원이 함께 하는 시간을 빼면 미르 15초, 지오 32초다.”고 덧붙였다.

또 “신인그룹 인피니트는 1초에서 4초까지 멤버들 각자가 부른 시간이 5초도 채 되지 못했다.”며 “노래 시간으로 따지면 가수라는 말이 무색하다.”고 일침을 가했다.

특히 ‘뉴스데스크’는 “가창력보다는 다양한 재능이 더 중시된다. 그러다보니 연예계에서는 가수로 정차하기 보다는 가수로 얼굴을 알렸다가 드라마 연예오락프로 진행자 등으로 전환하는 것이 선호되고 있다.”고 보도해 현 연예계 세태를 비판했다.

끝으로 ‘뉴스데스크’에서는 대중음악평론가 임진모씨의 발언을 빌려 “이런 그룹들이 인기를 누리는 현실 속에서 정말 가창력이 뛰어난 가수들이 설 자리는 어디인지..”라며 “가수의 기본은 노래를 부르는 것이다. 가사 3.5초로 얼마나 가창력 표현할 수 있을까”라고 말해 안타까움을 드러냈다.

방송 후 네티즌들은 “너무 통쾌한 방송이었다.”, “언급된 가수들에겐 굴욕일 수 있으나 ‘뉴스데스크’는 없는 말을 지어서 하지 않았다. 고로 가수들은 굴욕 받을 만 하다.”, “모두가 알고 있던 문제를 꼭 집어줬다.”, “현 가요계의 주소가 여실히 드러났다. 씁쓸한 마음뿐이다.”고 방송에 대한 소감을 전했다.
