Khashoggi, journalists are Time's "Person of the Year"

Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was murdered in October at his country's Istanbul consulate, was named Time magazine's “Person of the Year” Tuesday, an honor he shared with other targeted journalists recognized as “guardians” of the truth.

10월 자국의 이스탄불 주재 총영사관에서 살해된 자말 카슈끄지 사우디아라비아 기자가 지난 화요일 타임지 '올해의 인물'로 선정되며, 살해 협박을 받으며 '진실의 수호자'로 인정받는 다른 언론인들과 함께 영예를 나눴다.

Among those named with Khashoggi were Philippine journalist Maria Ressa, Reuters reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo ― currently imprisoned in Myanmar ― and the workforce of the Capital Gazette in the U.S. city of Annapolis, including five staff members killed in a June shooting.

“As we looked at the choices it became clear that the manipulation and abuse of truth is really the common thread in so many of this year's major stories, from Russia to Riyadh to Silicon Valley,”Time editor-inchief Edward Felsenthal said.

Time, which has awarded the "Person of the Year”title annually since 1927, published four different magazine covers for this week's edition, each one spotlighting different honorees.

1927년부터 매년 '올해의 인물'을 시상해온 타임지는 이번 주 4개의 다른 잡지 표지를 실었는데, 각각 다른 수상자를 집중 조명하고 있다.

It is the first time someone has been chosen posthumously for the prestigious cover.

이 명망 있는 표지에 사후 선출된 것은 이번이 처음이다.

Explaining the decision to honor dissident journalist Khashoggi, who was a U.S. resident and Washington Post columnist, Felsenthal said it was “very rare that a person's influence grows so immensely in death.”

미국 영주권자이자 워싱턴 포스트 칼럼니스트였던 반체제 언론인 카슈끄지에게 경의를 표하려는 결정에 대해 펠센털 편집장은 “사람의 영향력이 죽음을 통해 거대하게 커지는 것은 매우 드문 일이다”라고 말했다.
