Virus shakes image of Western superiority

As the world confronts the coronavirus crisis, Western countries have been showing signs of surprising weakness. Meanwhile, Asian countries, including Korea, Taiwan and China, have been praised for their responses to the fast-spreading virus.
세계가 코로나바이러스 사태에 직면하면서 서방국가들이 놀랄 만큼 쇠약해지는 기미를 보이고 있다. 한편 한국, 대만, 중국 등 아시아 국가들은 빠른 속도로 확산하는 바이러스에 대한 대응으로 찬사를 받고 있다.
The United States and some European countries have been struggling to contain the virus. There have been reports of ugly incidents from hoarding daily necessities to racist attacks against Asians.
미국과 일부 유럽 국가들은 이 바이러스를 억제하기 위해 고군분투하고 있다. 생필품 사재기부터 아시아인에 대한 인종차별 공격까지 추악한 사건들이 보도되고 있다.
Some analysts believe the global image of Western developed countries has been damaged since they have failed to live up to expectations. The result could be a decline in Western influence around the world.
일부 분석가들은 서양 선진국들이 기대에 부응하지 못하며 국가 이미지가 훼손되었다고 여긴다. 이는 전 세계에 끼치는 서양국가들의 영향력 감소로 이어질 수 있다.
"It is true that there are signs that the image of the West is changing," said Park Won-gon, a professor of international politics at Handong Global University. "The U.S., the world's most powerful country, was not the same one which played a leading role in dealing with the Ebola virus, as shown by medical staff begging for protective gear. In addition, European countries, regarded as among the most advanced, initially appeared defenseless against the coronavirus,” he added.
박원곤 한동대 국제지역학과 교수는 "서양의 이미지가 바뀌고 있다는 징후들이 있는 것은 사실"이라고 말했다. 그는 "세계 최강대국인 미국은 의료진이 보호장구를 구걸하는 것에서 알 수 있듯이 에볼라바이러스를 해결하는 데 있어 주도적인 역할을 했던 예전과는 다르다. 게다가, 최선진국들로 여겨지는 유럽 국가들도 처음에는 코로나바이러스에 대해 무방비 상태인 것으로 밝혀졌다”고 덧붙였다.
He said "On the other hand, China ― although it was the epicenter of the virus outbreak ― has now gotten it under control, while Korea has become an exemplary case for others, which supports the shift in perceptions."
그는 “반면 코로나바이러스 발병의 진원지였던 중국은 현재 바이러스를 통제한 상태이며, 한국의 경우 다른 나라들에 모범적인 사례가 되며 인식의 변화를 뒷받침하고 있다"고 설명했다.
Leif-Eric Easley, associate professor of international studies at Ewha Womans University, said, "The horrible toll that COVID-19 has taken in the U.S., the U.K., Italy and other European countries ― compared to the ability of Korea and Taiwan to flatten their epidemic curves ― has led commentators like Kishore Mahbubani to declare the start of a new era of international politics led by Asian competence and confidence."
레이프-에릭 이슬리 이화여대 국제학부 부교수는 "발병 곡선을 평탄하게 만드는 한국과 대만의 역량과 달리 미국, 영국, 이탈리아, 기타 유럽 국가에서 발생한 끔찍한 사망자 수는 키쇼어 마부바니와 같은 논객들로 하여금 '아시아의 역량과 자신감이 주도하는 국제정치의 새 시대' 선언으로 이어졌다”고 말했다.
"It is true that COVID-19 testing, contact tracing, isolation and treatment have produced better results in countries that were quick and effective in their implementation," he added.
그는 "코로나19 검사, 접촉자 추적, 격리, 치료가 빠르고 효과적인 국가들에서 더 나은 결과를 가져온 것은 사실"이라고 덧붙였다.
The public responses to the COVID-19 pandemic in the West have been in stark contrast with Asia. Political leaders, such as U.S. President Donald Trump, have engaged in a witch-hunt by blaming China for the virus. This has promoted racism and xenophobia against Asians.
서양의 코로나19 대유행에 대한 대중의 반응은 아시아와 극명한 대조를 보였다. 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령 등 정치 지도자들은 이 바이러스에 대해 중국을 비난하며 마녀사냥에 가담했다. 이는 인종차별과 아시아인에 대한 외국인 혐오증을 조장했다.
In addition to cases of hoarding consumer goods such as toilet paper, bogus conspiracy theories have poured out. One in the U.K. claims that 5G alters people's immune systems and changes people's DNA to make them more susceptible to COVID-19 infections, which has led people to set 5G towers on fire and threaten network engineers.
화장지 등 소비재를 사재기하는 사례 외에도 가짜 음모론들이 쏟아져 나왔다. 영국에서는 5G 네트워크가 사람들의 면역 체계를 바꾸고 사람들의 DNA를 변화시켜 코로나19 감염에 더 취약하게 만든다는 주장이 나왔고, 이로 인해 사람들이 5G 통신탑에 불을 지르고 네트워크 기술자들을 위협하기도 했다.
