Chinese students return home from Korea 'in fear of coronavirus'

Seven Chinese students at Daegu University have returned home over the past week in fear of the new coronavirus from China.
대구대학교에 재학 중인 중국인 유학생 7명이 중국에서 건너온 신종 코로나바이러스를 우려해 지난주 고국으로 돌아간 것으로 밝혀졌다.
Hankook Ilbo, sister paper of The Korea Times, reported Thursday that two Chinese students left for home after briefly staying at the dormitory in Gyeongsan, a city near Daegu where hundreds of COVID-19 infections have been reported since last week.
코리아타임스의 자매지인 한국일보는 지난주부터 수백 건의 코로나바이러스(COVID-19) 감염이 보고된 대구 인근 경산시 기숙사에 잠시 머물던 중국 유학생 2명이 고국으로 떠났다고 목요일 보도했다.
"The students' parents were uneasy about the situation here and asked them to come back," a Daegu University official said. "It's ironic that Chinese students leave (for China) in fear of the virus (from China)."
대구대 관계자는 "학부모들이 이곳 상황을 불안해하며 자식들에게 고국으로 돌아오라고 하고 있다"며 "중국인 학생들이 중국에서 건너온 바이러스를 두려워해 중국으로 떠난다는 것은 아이러니하다"고 말했다.
This comes after five other Chinese students who recently came to Gyeongsan for the new semester returned home on Feb. 24 over the same concerns.
이는 최근 신학기를 위해 경산에 온 다른 다섯 명의 중국인 학생들이 같은 우려로 2월 24일 출국한 이후에 나온 것이다.
Among 33 Chinese students who signed up for the dormitory, only one has checked into the facility, the official said.
기숙사에 등록한 중국인 유학생 33명 중 시설에 체크인한 사람은 1명뿐이라고 이 관계자는 전했다.
The COVID-19 virus, which emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December, had killed 13 people and infected nearly 1,600 in Korea as of Thursday morning.
지난 12월 중국 우한시에서 발생한 코로나바이러스(COVID-19)로 인해 목요일 오전 현재 국내에서 13명이 숨지고 약 1,600명이 감염됐다.
In mainland China, the death toll from the virus has surpassed 2,700, with more than 78,000 cases.
중국 본토에서는 코로나바이러스로 인한 사망자 수가 2,700명을 넘어섰고, 7만8000명 이상이 감염된 상태다.
