한국 정부, 코로나19 풍토병으로 격하할 것
Korea lifted most COVID-19 restrictions Thursday, starting a journey back to normalcy. The lifting came two years and one month after the country adopted such limits to battle the coronavirus. It is welcome news for the people who have struggled to ride out the unprecedented public health crisis.
한국은 목요일 대부분의 COVID19 규제를 해제하며 일상으로 돌아가는 여정을 시작했다. 이번 해제는 한국이 코로나바이러스를 극복하기 위해 제한을 가한 지 2년 1개월 만에 이루어진 것이다. 전례 없는 공중 보건 위기를 이겨내기 위해 씨름해온 국민들에게 반가운 소식이다.
Most notable is that all social distancing rules, except the mask mandate, were scrapped. Curfews on restaurants, cafes, bars and other entertainment establishments were lifted completely. And people are now allowed to gather without any restrictions such as the 10-person cap on private gatherings.
가장 주목할 만한 것은 실내외 마스크 착용 의무를 제외한 모든 사회적 거리두기를 종료했다는 것이다. 식당, 카페, 술집, 유흥업소 등에 대한 영업 시간 금지는 완전히 해제되었다. 사람들은 이제 사적 모임 인원 제한 10인과 같은 제한 없이 모이는 것이 허용된다.
Furthermore, health authorities plan to downgrade the infectious disease level of COVID-19 by one notch to the second-highest level under a four-tier system next Monday. After undergoing a four-week trial period, the seven-day mandatory quarantine for coronavirus patients will be lifted. Patients will no longer be subject to at-home treatment. Thus, they will receive treatments at local clinics like an endemic disease.
보건당국은 또 다음 주 월요일 코로나19 감염병 등급을 현행 4단계 분류 체계 하에 1급에서 2급으로 조정할 계획이다. 4주 간의 조정기를 거친 뒤 7일 간의 자가격리 의무가 해제될 예정이다. 환자들은 더 이상 재택 치료 대상이 아니다. 따라서 감염 환자들은 지역 병ㆍ의원에서 풍토병처럼 치료를 받게 된다.
All of these measures mean that the country is on track to treat COVID-19 as an endemic, two years after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the disease as a pandemic. This raises hopes that Korea will be the first country in the world to downgrade the novel coronavirus to an endemic, although the WHO has no immediate plan to do so.
이 모든 조치들은 세계보건기구가 코로나19를 팬데믹(세계적 유행병)으로 선언한 지 2년 만에 한국이 코로나19를 풍토병으로 취급하는 단계에 들어섰다는 것을 의미한다. 이것은 세계보건기구는 당장 계획에 없지만 한국은 신종 코로나바이러스를 풍토병으로 격하시킨 세계 최초의 국가가 될 것이라는 희망을 불러일으킨다.
The lifting of the restrictions is based on the government's conclusion that the spread of the Omicron variant has already passed its peak and is now on a steady decline. In fact, the daily new cases hit their highest level of 621,178 on March 17. And the number plunged to a 10-week low of 47,743 Monday, after reporting 93,001 Sunday and 107,916 Saturday.
이번 거리두기 해제는 오미크론 변종 확산이 이미 정점을 지나 현재 꾸준한 감소세를 보이고 있다는 정부의 결론을 기반으로 한 것이다. 실제로 지난 3월 17일 일일 신규 확진자 수는 621,178명으로 최고치를 기록했다. 그리고 확진자 수는 토요일 107,916명, 일요일 93,001명 이후 월요일 10주 만에 5만명대 아래인 47,743명으로 떨어졌다.
