Samsung's bonus creates sense of envy
Samsung Electronics' recent decision to pay its employees up to 500 percent of their basic monthly wage as a year-end special bonus appears to have created a sense of envy among some salaried workers at other companies.
삼성전자가 직원들에게 연말 특별 보너스로 월 기본급의 500퍼센트까지 지급하기로 한 최근 결정이 다른 회사 직장인들 사이에서 부러움을 사고 있는 것으로 보인다.
The electronics giant also decided to extend its incentives granted to 89partners in the memory chip business, saying it will provide them with 4.32 billion won ($3.9 million).
삼성전자는 또 메모리 반도체 사업 부문 협력업체 89개사에까지 성과급을 확대 제공하기로 결정하며 총 43억 2,000만 원의 성과급을 그들에게 제공할 것이라고 밝혔다.
Even though the latest news seems to have given the tech giant positive publicity, following the criticism over its head's alleged ties with the corruption scandal of impeached former President Park Geun-hye, this has caused mixed feelings among workers at other companies.
비록 최근의 뉴스가 삼성전자에 긍정적인 대중의 반응을 불러일으키는 것처럼 보이지만, 탄핵된 박근혜 전대통령과 비리 스캔들에 연루된 그들의 수장(=이재용 부회장)에 비판도 함께 따라오며, 이번 삼성 성과급 잔치에 대한 타 회사 직장인들의 착잡한 심정을 유발한다.
Some say they are jealous of their counterparts at Samsung Electronics, while others feel all the more deprived amid stagnant wage growth and soaring consumer prices.
일각에서는 삼성전자의 직원들을 부러워하며, 또 다른 이들은 오르지 않는 임금과 소비자물가 상승으로 인해 더욱더 박탈감을 느끼고 있다고 전했다.
“I was surprised with the news about Samsung's special bonuses as I thought receiving such generous rewards would be almost impossible even if one works for a conglomerate," said an office worker in Euljiro, central Seoul, asking not to be named. "To be honest, I feel a great distance between myself and Samsung workers.”
서울 중구 을지로의 한 회사원은 “아무리 대기업에서 일한다고 해도 삼성의 특별 보너스만큼 후한 보상을 받는 것이 거의 불가능하다고 생각했기 때문에 뉴스에 놀랐다”며 “솔직히 말해서, 나 자신과 삼성 직원들 사이에 큰 거리감을 느낀다”고 익명을 요구하며 말했다.
In 2017, the tech giant gave bonuses to employees of the semiconductor division that made remarkable achievements, but this year, the company will extend the special year-end bonuses to employees of other divisions such as household appliances and smartphones.
삼성전자는 2017년 눈에 띄는 성과를 거둔 반도체 사업부 직원들에게만 성과급을 지급했지만, 올해는 가전·스마트폰 등 다른 사업부 직원들에게도 연말 특별 보너스를 지급하기로 했다.
The firm plans to pay 500 percent of base salaries to employees of the semiconductor division and 100 percent of base salaries to employees of household appliances and smartphones divisions.
삼성전자는 반도체 사업부에 기본급 500퍼센트, 가전·스마트폰 사업부 직원들에게 기본급 100퍼센트를 지급할 계획이다.
