Diversity draws Chinese tourists

Listen

Chinese travelers or “Youke” have become a force to be reckoned with for the Korean tourism industry.

From chic shops at Garosu-gil in southern Seoul to walking trails on Jeju Island, major tour sites are full of Chinese travelers.

Why are they coming to Korea? They gave different answers. But they mostly said what’s good about Korea is that they can have diverse experiences, among other things.

“I visited Ewha Womans University area to browse for trendy clothes after watching the soap opera, ‘You That Came From the Stars,’ starring Jun Ji-hyun,” said Wang Shuman, 22, a university student from Beijing. “Although Koreans dress alike, they have a unique style both fashionable and down-to-earth. Koreans seem to better market their culture than us.”

Seoul’s uptown streetscape was both fresh and posh for the Hong Kong downtowners.

“My favorite place is Garosu-gil, Sinsa-dong, with elegant cafes, restaurants and designer shops. Every time I go there, I am astounded by the expansion of new streets. With trees alongside, it kinda feels like Paris,” said Navi Cam, 37, a make-up artist on her 19th visit.

“I’ve also been amazed by the sheer number of coffee shops, both franchise and mom-and-pop cafes. That would be out-of-the-way even in Britain-ruled Hong Kong,” she said.

Korea’s religious diversity and tolerance were perhaps be liberating to those from China’s secular society:

“My family comes to Korea every year close to the Buddha’s Birthday. Last year we took part in the ‘Lotus Lantern Festival’ with many other foreigners in front of the Jogye Temple in Insa-dong,” said He, 50, from Beijing on her fourth visit with young daughter.

“China might be a mightier country, but I think Koreans are wealthier as individuals. I really sensed the Korean social system is well developed. Frankly, we (Chinese) don’t care about the politics. Personal happiness, freedom, and wealth are what matter to us.”
