Democracy fighters have long tried to solve questions surrounding the mysterious death in 1975 of famous
Chang Joon-ha. Their attempts went a step forward Tuesday when one of the nation’s most authoritative forensic pathologists released his analysis result.
“The late opposition leader seemed to have died of a severe blow to his head before falling into a valley,” said Dr. Lee Jeong-bin, professor emeritus of Seoul National University College of Medicine.

ing an autopsy, upon the wishes of his bereaved family members who had no trust in law enforcement authorities under a dictatorial government.
Lee’s conclusion cannot of course be the final one, as he did the job at the request of a private group seeking the truth behind Chang’s death.
It’s the duty of society to do the rest.
In a word, the late Chang was the “natural enemy” of former President Park Chung-hee, father of the incumbent leader, Park Geun-hye. Unlike Park, who served as an officer in the Japanese Imperial Army, Chang was an independence fighter, who deserted the Japanese military and walked 6,000 km to join Korea’s government-in-exile in Chongquing, China. The senior Park reportedly both hated Chang and felt inferior to him.
What the government and political parties should do seems clear. They should

ing a special law if needed. All related agencies, especially the National Intelligence Service that has all the materials related to the incident, should positively cooperate in such an investigation until there are no suspicions left.
All of this process is eventually up to the one person with the highest authority ― the President. While campaigning, then candidate Park visited and apologized to Chang’s bereaved family members.
The election is over, but the president may still find it difficult to dig up what could prove to be another of her father’s past wrongs. As a leader, however, Park should use this opportunity to realize her slogan of “grand national unity.”
The public will be watching whether their leader is a politician of her words.
