N. Korea says test-fired new air defense missile system, long-range cruise missile

Listen

Summary

North Korea test-fired a new air defense missile system and conducted a long-range strategic cruise missile strike drill toward a virtual airport target on Wednesday. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff detected multiple missiles launched toward the East Sea from the Sondok area in South Hamgyong Province. The launches marked North Korea’s fourth weapons test in a week and came during the ongoing South Korea-U.S. Freedom Flag air drills.

Key Facts

  • The Missile Administration said the air defense test assessed the projectile’s guided mode, target identification and tracking, and the system’s detection-information processing device.
  • The Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missiles flew less than 300 kilometers and left open the possibility that they included a close-range ballistic missile.
  • The week’s earlier tests involved a 600-millimeter multiple rocket launcher on Thursday, a cluster bomb for tactical ballistic missiles on Saturday, and a dispersal warhead for a strategic cruise missile on Monday.
  • Kim Jong-sik, a member of North Korea’s Central Military Commission, criticized South Korea-U.S. combined exercises earlier in the week.

North Korea has test-fired a new air defense missile system and conducted a strike drill with a long-range strategic cruise missile, state media reported Thursday, marking Pyongyang's fourth weapons test in a week.

The North's report came after South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) detected the North firing multiple missiles toward the East Sea from the Sondok area in South Hamgyong Province early Wednesday.

The Missile Administration's test of a new air defense missile system was aimed at confirming its technical capabilities, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

"The test-fire proved the technical specifications and reliability of the new material and intelligent multiple guided mode of the projectile, target identification and tracking capability of the air-defense missile system and its detection information processing device," it said.

In addition, a firepower subunit of the long-range strategic cruise missile unit in the eastern area staged a strike drill on the same day, using a long-range strategic cruise missile against a virtual airport target, according to the report.

The JCS earlier said the missiles flew less than 300 kilometers, with authorities leaving open the possibility that they involved a close-range ballistic missile.

Wednesday's launch came as Kim Yo-jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, issued back-to-back statements this week rejecting a U.S. investigation that blamed the North for stealing more than $6 billion in cryptocurrency from Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange. It also coincided with the U.S. midterm elections, widely seen as a referendum on U.S. President Donald Trump halfway into his second term.

North Korea's latest weapons tests appeared to be aimed at responding to Freedom Flag, the ongoing South Korea-U.S. air drills, experts said.

Earlier this week, Kim Jong-sik, a member of the Central Military Commission, criticized Seoul-Washington's combined exercises, including Freedom Flag, accusing the "enemies" of intensifying their "military moves in public or behind closed doors."

Wednesday's test was the North's fourth weapons test in a week, starting with the firing of a 600-millimeter "ultra-precision" multiple rocket launcher Thursday, with leader Kim in attendance.

It tested a cluster bomb that can be mounted on tactical ballistic missiles Saturday and a "dispersal warhead" for a strategic cruise missile Monday.

The Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, did not cover the last three events.
