A 2.5-magnitude earthquake was detected near North Korea's nuclear test site in Gilju, North Hamgyong Province, which South Korean experts say was an “induced earthquake” from a powerful underground nuclear test in 2017.
The tremor occurred at 9:33 a.m., the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said.
An induced earthquake refers to a minor quake driven by altered geological stresses and strains on the Earth's crust.
The epicenter was 3 kilometers southeast of the test site, the KMA said.
North Korea conducted its sixth underground nuclear test at the site on Sept. 3, 2017.
