U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry agreed Thursday to ramp up joint efforts to deal with the North Korean nuclear crisis and other pending global challenges such as Syria, Iran, Mali and climate change.

The leaders held bilateral talks in Washington, their first meeting since Kerry became Washington's top diplomat earlier this month.

They called North Korea's nuclear test this week an enormously provocative act and a direct challenge to the global community.
