For the first time, a foreign production has won a Busan Theatre Award, with organizers calling it a sign of the city’s expanding role in global artistic dialogue.

Israel’s Beit Lessin Theatre won the New Perspective award at the 20th Busan Theatre Awards for its production of "Antigone," the Busan Theatre Association said. It is the first time in the awards’ 20-year history that an international production has been honored.

The production offers a reinterpretation of Sophocles’ classical tragedy, transposing the story to the era of World War II to explore themes of moral choice, authority and resistance in times of conflict. Korean audiences were introduced to the work last year at the Busan International Performing Arts Festival, one of the country’s major showcases for domestic and international performing arts.

Under the awards’ rules, all theatrical productions staged in Busan are eligible for consideration, regardless of origin. The selection of "Antigone," the association said, underscores the local theater community’s intent to move beyond regional boundaries and engage with contemporary global discourse through the performing arts.

“This recognition is a powerful testament to the universal resonance of Israeli theater and its ability to engage audiences across cultures and borders,” said Rafael Harpaz, Israel’s ambassador to Korea. He added that the honor could help strengthen cultural and artistic exchanges between the two countries and encourage further collaboration.

Beit Lessin Theatre is one of Israel’s leading repertory theater companies and is internationally known for innovative stagings of classical works as well as original productions that address social and historical themes. The award highlights the growing international profile of Israeli theater and its contribution to global cultural dialogue.

The 20th Busan Theatre Awards ceremony was held Wednesday at the Busan Arts Center, during the association’s annual general assembly.
