Acting U.S. Ambassador to Korea Joseph Yun will leave his post Friday, the U.S. Embassy in Seoul said Monday, about nine months after he assumed the role to fill in the position just before the launch of the Donald Trump administration.
"Ambassador Joseph Yun, who has served for nearly a year as Chargé d'Affaires, ad interim, at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul, will depart his position on October 24," the embassy said on its X account.
"The State Department expresses its deep appreciation to Ambassador Yun for his leadership and dedication in advancing the United States' interests and further strengthening our enduring and ironclad commitment to the U.S.-Republic of Korea Alliance," it said.
The announcement confirms earlier media reports that Washington is replacing Yun ahead of Trump's visit to Korea for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, slated for next week.
U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Kevin Kim is likely to succeed Yun in an acting capacity, diplomatic sources said.
