Talks with NK’s new regime good beginning: US envoy

Listen

A U.S. nuclear envoy said Saturday talks with North Korean officials in Beijing made a "good" start, signaling that long-stalled six-party nuclear disarmament talks may be able to resume in the not-too-distant future.

Glyn Davies flew to Seoul Saturday to brief South Korean officials on two days of talks he had held with his North Korean counterpart, Kim Kye-gwan, in Beijing. In Seoul, he met with his South Korean counterpart Lim Sung-nam Saturday.

The Beijing talks were "good beginning with the new government in the DPRK (North Korea)," Davies told reporters after meeting with Lim.

The Beijing talks were the first contact between North Korea and the United States since the death of the North's leader, Kim Jong-il. His youngest son, Kim Jong-un, took over power.

The six-party talks, which involve the two Koreas, the U.S., China, Japan and Russia, have been suspended since late 2010. (Yonhap)
