Seoul denied on Monday the claim by North Korea that the South Korean military had crossed into the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and fired at a civil police post in the North.
An official of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said that ``there was no such incident,'' reported Bloomberg.com. The official requested anonymity, citing JCS policy.
On Sunday, the North's official Korean Central News Agency said a group of South Korean soldiers had earlier in the day crossed into the eastern section of the DMZ and fired toward the post, threatening the safety of the civil policemen stationed there.
The North, which has made similar claims in the past, described the incident as a ``grave armed provocation.''
The accusation comes as the South Korean government is investigating the possibility of the North's involvement in the sinking of its Navy vessel Cheonan near the disputed maritime border of the two countries.
Pyongyang has not commented on the ship's sinking.
