Pyongyang UN Chief Meets NK Diplomat Over Summit

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon met with the North Korean envoy in New York on Monday and relayed his full support and hopes for a successful Korean summit this week, Yonhap News reported.

Ban held talks with Amb. Pak Gil-yon, head of the North Korean mission to the United Nations, officials said.

"I am confident that the summit will pave the groundwork for peace and security (on) the Korean Peninsula, ultimately leading to the reunification of the Korean Peninsula," said Ban, a former South Korean foreign minister.

"As secretary general of the United Nations, I again commit myself to do whatever I can," Yonhap quoted Ban as saying.

Pak said his government has high expectations for this week's talks and believes they will contribute not only to peace between the Koreas but to Northeast Asia and the world.
