A royal romance brimming with charm is on its way as Byeon Woo-seok and IU step into the spotlight in MBC’s upcoming series “Perfect Crown,” one of the year’s most buzzed-about dramas. The network unveiled the project Monday.

Set in an alternate modern-day Korea that still retains a constitutional monarchy, the romantic comedy traces the fateful encounter between a “rich heiress and powerless prince.” It tells the story of a woman born into immense wealth but burdened by her commoner status and a prince who, despite his royal blood, has been stripped of privilege. Together, they embark on a journey to break social barriers and rewrite their destinies.

The series has drawn particular attention as MBC’s next big royal romance following its 2006 hit “Princess Hours.”

IU, who plays Seong Hui-ju, the intelligent and ambitious daughter of conglomerate Castle Group, said, “I play a woman who has everything but the official title to match,” introducing her character during a press conference for the drama at Josun Palace in Gangnam District, Seoul, Monday. “She gets frustrated easily — you’ll see why ‘irritated’ comes up first in her character description. But beyond her temper and ambition, she’s a charmingly complex character," she added.

Byeon, who portrays Grand Prince I-an, the late king's only younger brother and second son of the royal family, introduced his character as “the most beloved member of the royal family, yet he must neither speak out nor stand out.”

“When I first read the script, I could clearly picture the scenes. I also felt a deep connection to I-an’s struggles, which made me want to bring him to life as genuinely as possible,” he said.

Their on‑screen chemistry has already sparked wide interest, following IU’s recent “When Life Gives You Tangerines” and Byeon’s breakout success in “Lovely Runner.”

Speaking about creative pressure, IU said, “I felt more relaxed choosing a project with a different tone from my previous works. There’s a kind of pressure unique to this drama, but I wanted to take on something new.”

Returning to television two years after his global hit “Lovely Runner,” Byeon said, “I’m grateful for all the love and attention. Rather than feeling burdened, I just hope viewers continue to support and enjoy this new story.”

Director Park Joon‑hwa, celebrated for “Alchemy of Souls” (2022) and “What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim” (2018), said the new series “offers a kind of excitement that feels different from previous titles.” He added, “There won’t be a dull moment — audiences will be immersed from start to finish.”

The series will also be released globally through Disney+. “This drama carries a distinctly Korean aesthetic. The filming team captured it beautifully, so I hope viewers can appreciate that charm,” said Byeon.

IU added, “We express a lot of our characters’ personalities through wardrobe. Today’s outfits were inspired by Woo‑seok’s ideas from the poster images. Each design blends tradition and modernity to suit the character, and that detail is reflected everywhere — it’ll be fun for viewers to spot.”

Park echoed that sentiment. “The visuals embrace Korean cultural motifs, but the emotional relationships are universal. We hope audiences around the world can enjoy them without preconceived notions,” according to the director.

“Perfect Crown” will premiere on Friday.
