The 2022 school action sensation "Weak Hero," which first drew attention on local platform Wavve, returns with a bold new chapter — this time for a global audience. Facing funding hurdles at home, the series has found new life and scale under the production wing of streaming giant Netflix, signaling a dramatic leap from domestic hit to international phenomenon.

Director You Su-min, who led the series to success by adding unique action to a school drama to break away from typical conventions, has teamed up once again with executive producer Han Jun-hee. The new season is expected to captivate viewers with even more explosive action and raw emotions.

Actor Park Ji-hoon, who takes on the lead role Yeon Si-eun, introduced the "Weak Hero" series as "the coming-of-age story of a boy who stands up to even greater violence."

Even when looking at the storyboards, the actor said he was surprised at how much Si-eun's fighting abilities had improved. "He isn’t someone who looks for trouble, but he constantly finds himself dragged into violent situations. Through these repeated encounters, I believe he’s developed and matured as a character, especially through his actions," he said Monday during a press conference for the series at Hotel Naru Seoul - MGallery in Mapo District, Seoul.

In the series, which premieres Friday, Si-eun, a brilliant but physically frail student who previously fought against school violence and lost his closest friends in the process, continues his story set in a high school plagued by systemic violence and bullying.

After Si-eun transfers to Eunjang High School, carrying deep emotional scars, encounters new friends — Park Hu-min, Seo Jun-tae, and Go Hyun-tak — but also faces ruthless new enemies, including the formidable Alliance gang led by Na Baek-jin and the mysterious rival Geum Seong-jae.

The director said he focused more on making this season visually stunning and worked hard to bring out a distinct genre style. At the production presentation, the trailer showed scenes of group fights and various confrontations between characters. Si-eun, who in the previous season would charge in with nothing but a single pen, has leveled up his combat skills.

He also said the main narrative he focused on while making the series was the story of a boy growing into an adult. "While Season 1 was about growing pains, for Season 2, I thought about how one becomes an adult, and the keyword that came to mind was ‘reconciliation,'" he said. "There is reconciliation with others, but it also includes reconciliation with oneself. I think acknowledging and accepting these things is necessary to become an adult."

"Weak Hero Class 1," which was released on Netflix on March 25, ahead of the release of its Season 2, climbed to No. 2 in the global top 10 under the non-English series category and made it into the top 10 in 70 countries, generating significant buzz.

“I wanted to craft ‘Weak Hero’ a timeless classic — one that will be cherished long into the future. It’s become a project that everyone involved can truly take pride in," said Han, the producer.

"I’m thrilled that we can now share this story with audiences worldwide. Working alongside such talented actors and presenting our work on a global stage is an honor I deeply appreciate.”

"Weak Hero Class 2" will premiere Friday on Netflix.
