Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo's divorce shocks foreign fans

The news of actor Song Joong-ki and actress Song Hye-kyo's divorce drew frantic reactions from the couple's fans around the world.

Joong-ki confirmed through his lawyer, Thursday, that he has sought a divorce settlement to end his marriage with Hye-kyo. She also released a statement explaining the split is due to irreconcilable differences in personality. The couple tied the knot in 2017.

Fans have been posting pictures of the 2016 drama “Descendants of the Sun," in which the couple first met as co-stars, along with the quotes.

“From this day forward, we knew that re-watching DOTS (Descendants of the Sun) will never be the same again,” a fan wrote with a picture of the couple from the drama.

“It really breaks my heart. I can't accept the fact that they are getting divorced. I wish that I am dreaming,” a user commented on The Korea Times's article of the couple's divorce.

Another user wrote on Twitter, “Nothing is more heartbreaking than reading those articles about songs' divorce, it makes me less believe in true love and happily ever after.”

Multiple media outlets around the world also covered the story on the front page of their websites. Indonesian news outlet The Jakarta Post reported, “Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo to divorce: 9 things to know about the golden couple.” CNN Philippines highlighted the divorce with an article titled “Song Joong Ki files for divorce from Song Hye Kyo.”
