'99 out of 100 Korean entertainers get cosmetic surgery'

An obscure Korean entertainer faces an outpouring of criticism after making a groundless allegation in Japan: “99 out of 100 Korean entertainers have received cosmetic surgery.”

Kang Han-na, 38, made the comment on a Yomiuri TV talk show on Saturday, according to

Explaining the cosmetic surgery craze in Korea, she said, “As far as I know, 99 out of 100 Korean entertainers have gone under the knife to have better looks.”

She might have made the comment knowing it would cause controversy and raise the eyebrows of viewers in her motherland, but she did not back up her statement with any reasonable data or statistics.

“When establishing a K-pop girl band, its agency usually includes at least one member who has never received cosmetic surgery,” Kang said. “Sometimes the member wins popularity and tends to have a lovely personality.”

There was little information about Kang and what she did in Korea. According to reports, Kang was born in 1981 and worked as a video jockey while attending Sookmyung Women's University in Seoul. She moved to Japan in 2007, working there as a weather forecaster.
