Male celebrities deemed “ugly” by MBC’s TV variety show “Infinite Challenge” are proving that ugliness is a new virtue in Korea’s show business.
On the weekly show’s feature segment
“Let Me Introduce My Ugly Friend: Season 2,”
50-something actor Woo Hyun was voted by 16 co-starring “ugly” celebrities as the ugliest in the first impression evaluation.
Olympic silver medalist marathoner Lee Bong-ju, guitarist Kim Tae-jin and poet Ha Sang-wook followed.
The real fun lies in the stars denying their ugliness while still trying to stand out as funny entertainers by emphasizing their “sub-par” looks.
In the first season, TV personality Noh Hong-chul was selected the ugliest in the final vote.
“They are not just ugly but also attractive people with unique characteristics,” said online daily OhMyNews.
“The segment keenly satirizes the country, which is deep-rooted in judging people by their looks and school background.”
