For the past few years, Korea’s music industry has been swept by a renewed wave of bands. What once felt like a passing trend has instead taken root, with bands now firmly embedded in the country’s mainstream pop landscape.

One development that few anticipated, however, is the rise of JYP Entertainment. Long recognized as one of K-pop’s defining hitmakers, the company has emerged as a formidable presence in the band scene.

With the sustained success of DAY6 and the debut of Xdinary Heroes — its first new band in roughly six years — JYP has rapidly established itself as a major player in South Korea’s modern band movement.

JYP’s DAY6 drives band boom, Xdinary Heroes accelerates growth

At the center of Korea’s recent band boom stands DAY6, which marked its 10th anniversary last year.

Since debuting in 2015, the band has steadily built a following through meticulously crafted music and relentless touring. But it was in 2024 that DAY6 reached a new peak.

Older tracks such as “You Were Beautiful” and “Time of Our Life” experienced a chart resurgence, while “Welcome to the Show,” the band’s first release following its hiatus for its members' military service, gained immediate traction and further accelerated its rise in popularity.

Success continued to follow. The albums “Band Aid” and “The Decade,” along with the digital single “Maybe Tomorrow,” each recorded strong commercial performance.

The band went on to perform at major venues including Inspire Arena, Gocheok Sky Dome and KSPO DOME, before reaching Goyang Stadium, one of Korea’s largest concert venues.

The Goyang performance marked the first time a domestic band headlined the stadium. At KSPO DOME, DAY6 also set a new record for the highest attendance in KSPO DOME concert history

Now, DAY6 has effectively reached a point where new releases consistently perform strongly and concerts routinely sell out. With the band making increasingly frequent appearances on variety programs to broaden its mainstream appeal, its dominance in the domestic band scene appears unlikely to face immediate challenge.

Meanwhile, Xdinary Heroes, the group’s junior labelmate, is showing equally notable growth. Debuting in 2021 as JYP’s second band following DAY6, the group has gradually built a distinct musical identity while expanding its fan base.

In 2024, Xdinary Heroes launched the “2024 Xperiment Project,” designed to explore the band’s artistic range. The initiative contributed to its rising popularity, with the group selling out multiple solo concerts and expanding its performance scale.

Last year, the band capped its world tour, “Beautiful Mind,” with a solo finale at Jamsil Indoor Stadium, selling out all dates. Earlier this year, it also sold out its second fan meeting “Xclusive Party” at Korea University’s Hwajeong Gymnasium during presales.

The group’s musical activities have also gained international visibility. It performed at the global music festival "Lollapalooza Chicago" and opened for British rock band Muse during the band’s concert in South Korea.

The appearances reinforced its reputation beyond the labels of “DAY6’s junior group” or “a JYP band,” with industry observers increasingly viewing Xdinary Heroes as an established act within the domestic band scene.

JYP gains renewed recognition in band scene

Success of DAY6 and Xdinary Heroes brought renewed attention to JYP. Long recognized as a powerhouse in K-pop idol production, the agency now has emerged as a rising force in band-focused music.

Much of that success can be traced to Studio J, JYP’s division dedicated to band development. Through production support tailored specifically to band music, the unit has helped DAY6 and Xdinary Heroes strengthen their competitive edge.

"Both DAY6 and Xdinary Heroes debuted with self-written and self-produced music. Studio J focuses on the essence of music while continuously exploring ways each group can further develop," said an official from Studio J in an interview with the Hankook Ilbo.

“We place strong emphasis on member growth, encouraging experimentation while supporting songwriting and helping refine each group’s musical direction.”

Studio J pointed to DAY6’s “Every DAY6” project and Xdinary Heroes’ “2024 Xperiment Project” as representative examples.

DAY6 released new music every month in 2017 to strengthen connections with listeners. Xdinary Heroes’ project featured a concert series titled “Closed Beta” alongside digital single releases under “Open Beta.” Both projects helped the bands broaden their artistic scope and deepen engagement with fans.

“Our goal is to help DAY6 and Xdinary Heroes continue delivering music that offers comfort and energy to listeners,” a Studio J official said.

He added that, ultimately, it was the music — rather than marketing strategies — that drove the success of DAY6 and Xdinary Heroes in the band scene.

“Vocals and instrumental performances won over fans during solo concerts. DAY6 delivered emotionally immersive songs, while Xdinary Heroes, with their dense sound, channeled raw rock energy.”

“We sincerely thank fans who continue to support the music performed by DAY6 and Xdinary Heroes,” Studio J added.
